By Friday, the roles reversed. “What were you doing?” Alex asked during a late-night call. “Nothing really,” Jamie responded, their voice tinged with the calm of the evening.

“Are you busy?” Alex asked, hoping for a moment more.

“I was in the middle of something, but not really, what’s up?” Jamie was always ready to lend an ear.

“I called to say hi,” Alex said simply, and that was enough to bridge the distance between them.
